2022 COMPETITION ENTRY – FINAL REMINDER

As we enter the final weekend before competition entries close (at midnight on 28th February), please may I ask you to time out to enter our 2022 competitions and support our President Dave King

(20 Feb 2022)

2022 COMPETITION ENTRY – REMINDER

This is a reminder that the closing date for 2022 competitions  (28th FEBRUARY 2022) is fast approaching. If you haven’t already entered, please do so by midnight next Monday. If you have any problems, please contact Dave Jarrold directly on 07771-882595

We have heard that players are not entering competitions because of a rumour that there will regional finals in the  Major Championships, before the finals at Leamington. THAT IS NOT TRUE.

Bowls England have categorically declared that regional finals will only played in their National Competitions (Senior Singles/Pairs, Champion of Champions, Mixed Pairs/Fours, Family Pairs, Double Fours, Top Club and Tony Allcock Trophy, for Men AND Ladies) and then only if required

(30 Jan 2022)

2022 COMPETITIONS - PORTAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Some entrants have been experiencing difficulties when attempting to pay for entries

This problem was raised with the support team on 5th January and because of its intermittent nature the problem has been difficult to resolve. That said, we are told that it will be resolved by Wednesday (2nd February), which is after the original closing date. Therefore the closing date will be revised to give everyone a chance to enter - NEW CLOSING DATE -  28th FEBRUARY 2022

We are hearing that players are not entering competitions because they have heard that there will regional finals in the  Major Championships, before the finals at Leamington. THAT IS A UNFOUNDED RUMOUR.

(4 Jan 2022)

2022 COMPETITIONS - PORTAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The minor problem with players being unable to enter the Senior Fours has now been fixed and the competition has been re-opened

We have had reports of players being unable to make payments for their entries via cellphones. This has been reported as a problem and we await a fix. As soon the problem is resolved, an update will be posted here. In the meantime, players may successfully enter using other devices (tablets, laptops or computers, either Apple or Android)

The closing date for competition entry (31st January) is less than one month away and to date we have fewer entries for 2022 than for 2021.

Whilst we appreciate there may be uncertainty about competition play given the Covid-19 situation, current guidelines suggest that normal play will be allowed albeit with the temporary Bowls England enforced competition regulations which can be found here

(30 Mar 2021)

ESSEX and NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

You may have seen updates on social media from Bowls England and others about the return to playing bowls and changes to the format of some of the competitions. I would like to bring you up to date with how things currently stand within Essex.

If the government lockdown roadmap continues to operate as expected and the next steps are met on time I envisage that ALL of the County Championships and Competitions will operate as normal. We should have a very good idea of the direction of travel at the next step (12th April).

The County semi finals (17th July) and finals (31st July) will be played as normal at Essex County BC, I will confirm as soon as possible what the dates will be for all other rounds of the various championships/competitions.

The draws for all ECBA Competitions will be published on the Competition Portal as soon as they have been completed

Due to some changes imposed by Bowls England, Essex will have two representatives in the following Championships at the national finals:

Singles, Pairs, Triples, Fours, Two Bowl Singles, Junior Singles

Essex will have one representative in the following at the national championships:

Senior Fours, Junior Pairs

Bowls England have also imposed some special playing conditions for those matches to be played at the national finals, as follows:

Pairs, will be played over 18 ends with 3 bowls each player.

Triples, will be played over 18 ends with 2 bowls each player.

Fours, will be played over 15 ends with 2 bowls each player.

Senior Fours, will be played over 15 ends with 2 bowls each player.

Junior Pairs, will be played over 18 ends with 3 bowls each player.

I will, as soon as possible, advise in a further news item, whether there is to be any change in the playing conditions within the County Championships; there will be no change to the playing conditions in the County Competitions.

Please note that the Competition Regulations have been updated and will be published in the next edition of the County Handbook, please make yourselves familiar with these regulations.

Any questions regarding the aforementioned, please contact me directly.

NATIONAL FINALS - A view from ECBA President  - Dave King

Dave spent 25th August to 11th September at the National Finals at Leamington Spa, so when I caught up with him at the ECBA Excom meeting on Monday 12th, I asked for his thoughts. He had renewed friendships with Presidents from all over the country, made new friends and watched some fantastic bowling (he didn’t play one bad bowl either!), perhaps because, whilst the greens are still far from perfect, they are better than previous years. He commented that Bowls England’s organisation is getting better too. Apparently, he had a fantastic time, supported (as ever) by wife Chris, Senior Deputy Richard Dodd, Malcolm Stark and from the ECWBA, Joan Barrett (Senior Vice President) and Linda Mills (President in 2019). As a County, we are becoming more used to success at National finals and Dave commented ‘This year's finals were a slow burner. All Essex players acquitted themselves well in the first fortnight, but we had to wait for the final 3 days for some silverware’. (Photographs to follow)

(11 Sep 2022)

NATIONAL FINALS - BALCOMB TROPHY

Essex have a decent record in this relatively new double rink competition; runners up in 1996, 2013 and in 2019 (losing by 3 shots), winners in 2017, they added to our previous successes with two good wins against stiff opposition to lift the title once again

Malcolm Stark said that they hadn’t had an easy run in this competition, having beaten Suffolk (33-28), Hunts (43-28) and Norfolk (45-22) in the Regional finals, then Gloucester (45-39) and Yorkshire (45-27) at Leamington (cards here - semi / final)

(10 Sep 2022)

NATIONAL FINALS - MORE MIXED PAIRS SUCCESS!

Having just recovered from the excitement on Friday, Saturday saw the Essex Mixed pair of Sylvia Bloomfield (losing finalist 2016 ) and Paul Smyth lift the National Mixed Pairs title (two years in a row for Essex and 4 time overall). Great work from them. I congratulated Sylvia at the game between the ECWBA and ECBA and she said ‘- ‘I was 80 in July!’. There’s hope for us all!!

(9 Sep 2022)

NATIONAL FINALS - EDWARD DOES IT AGAIN!

Whilst Elaine was doing well, Edward Morris won his first three National Singles games on Thursday 8th, attempting to regain the trophy he won in 2019. A further three victories on Friday 9th saw Edward crowned Champion once more

(8 Sep 2022)

NATIONAL FINALS - SO CLOSE FOR ELAINE

2021 BE Mixed Pairs Champion, Elaine Score was playing well at Leamington once again. Five victories put her into the final of the Ladies National Singles, where she was unlucky to come up against in-form Rebecca Moorbey from Hunts, where she finally succumbed 21-16.

Moorbey was a losing semi-finalist in the Ladies Pairs and had lifted the Junior Singles title just 5 days earlier

YET MORE SUCCESS FOR EDWARD!

Representing England in the European Championships in Ayr last week, Ed was victorious in the Men’s Pairs, winning all 9 of the games he played with partner Tom McGuinness. A Gold Medal!

Following that success, Ed (with Tom McGuinness, Harry Goodwin and Lee Calver) headed their group winning six of their seven games. However, after beating Ireland in the semi-final, England were unlucky to lose to Scotland in the final. Just a silver this time!

With the ladies also doing well in all their disciplines, England were also crowned winners in the European Team Championship

URGENT MESSAGE FROM JOHN TULLY - REVISED PLAYING CONDITIONS

Given that a national emergency has been declared by HM Government, we feel it is wholly appropriate to postpone all play in the South and North Essex Fours on Monday 18th July

Games scheduled for 18th July will now be played on 25th with subsequent rounds being pushed back by one week. We will utilise the spare week (15th August) for semi-finals

The temporary playing conditions will no longer be required, so matches will revert to 21 ends with a 6pm start time

(16 Jul 2022)

URGENT MESSAGE FROM JOHN TULLY - RE PLAYING CONDITIONS SEE NOTE ABOVE

Due to the unprecedented weather conditions expected this week - the following playing conditions will apply in the South and North Essex Fours

Matches to played over 15 ends, with a commencement time of 18:30

In addition for the Double Fours and Shield competitions, following Bowls England guidelines, it will be permitted for matches to be played over a reduced number of ends. That number to be mutually agreed before the start and will be played on every rink of the tie

These conditions to be in force until further notice

2022 COMPETITION ENTRY – CLOSED

We are seeking confirmation from clubs that entrants in ECBA competitions are bona-fide members of their designated club

(as per Competition Regulation 1(a)), before commencing the competition draws week commencing 21st March

In the meantime, you can see a list of all entrants here or on the Competition Portal

(25 Feb 2022)

VOTE FOR RICHARD

This year Bowls England are holding an Awards Night on the 19th of February.

Most categories will be decided by a chosen panel except the UNSUNG HERO which will be by online voting.

RICHARD SPRIGGS of Essex County BC is on the shortlist, and it would be great if we, as Essex County Bowling Association Members, could support Richard by voting for him. The voting is open on the Bowls England website here

GEORGE COSTER RIP - FUNERAL UPDATE

We are sorry to have to announce the death of George Coster

He will be sadly missed by all that knew him

The funeral is at 10.30 am on Friday 21st January 2022 and will take place at

The wake will follow the funeral and will be at The Cross Keys Pub/Restaurant - 1, The Street, White Notley, Witham, CM8 1RQ

George’s daughter, Emma, has asked that donations (in the form of cash or cheque) could be made in lieu of flowers.

Cheques should be made payable to The Council for Voluntary Services and sent to her

Emma Coster, 27 Highclere Road, Braintree, CM77 7WX

All donations will go directly to the voluntary charity Dementia Café who ably supported Emma and George for the past 2 years
