2021 ECBA COMPETITION ENTRIES - A REMINDER

Since the launch on 19 October over 370 members have registered to use the portal, which is significantly fewer than entered the 2020 County Competitions. That figure is expected to grow as there are still some regular participants yet to sign up.

Please take a moment to register and enter the competitions, if you have not already done so.

If you have entered, please remind your club colleagues that registration and entry is now their responsibility.

The closing date for entries to the competitions (for this year only) will be 31st December.

John Tully, ECBA Competition Secretary

2021 COMPETITIONS - PORTAL ANNOUNCEMENT

So far, we have significantly fewer entries for 2021 than for 2020. A telephone poll taken from the players who entered in 2020, but have not yet entered for 2021,  has revealed that many of our members have concerns over the current Covid-19 crisis

A summary of what happened with the 2020 entries below

Singles, 2-wood Singles, Pairs, Triples, Fours, Senior Fours, Junior Singles and Pairs entry monies were refunded to clubs and passed on to entrants

Secretaries, Benevolent and Unbadged Singles were played

North and South Essex Fours, Double Fours, Shield were not played, but entries are free in 2021

It is anticipated that a similar arrangement will be adopted for this years competitions, should they be cancelled

With this is mind, we have extended the closing date for this year’s competitions until 31st January 2021 to allow the efficacy of the vaccination program to be more established which will give more players an opportunity to enter

(26 Jan 2021)

ALL POTENTIAL ECBA COMPETITION ENTRANTS FOR 2021

You may recall that the deadline for entries has been extended until 31st January - a list of entries to date can be found here

please do so immediately
If you have experienced ANY issues with the new process, please contact John Tully 07970-100634 or Dave Jarrold 07771-882595

BALCOMB TROPHY RESULT

Disappointment for Essex

In the Balcomb Trophy yesterday, trailing by 4 after both rinks had played 20 ends, Essex held the 5 required to win

with only 5 bowls (out of 336) left. However both Norfolk skips drew second shot, leaving Essex 2 short.

As Malcolm Stark says ‘You can be so close, but so far away’

Final score Essex 36 - 38 Norfolk. Scorecards here

ASHFORD CUP FINAL - 1ST AUGUST

An excellent morning of bowls played on a very good green at Dunmow BC

For the first time since I took over running of this competition (in 2007) the match finished

in a tie across the 6 rinks, 3 rinks each, with a score of 104-104

An extra end was played on each rink, resulting in Group 3 winning 9 shots to 5

Congratulations to Group 3 for winning the Trophy for the third year running, the

first time this has happened.

BOWLS ENGLAND COMPETITOR SURVEY

The results of the recent survey sent to all Essex CBA/National Competition entrants were passed to Bowls England in a recent ZOOM meeting

Bowls England have commissioned their own survey, which can be found here

It is the view of the ECBA that it is in everyone's best interest to have ALL bowlers views considered by Bowls England (our governing body) and not just the opinions of a select few

You are therefore urged to complete their questionnaire by 16:00 this Sunday 29th August.

EASTERN COUNTIES RESULTS - MORE SUCCESS FOR EDWARD

Edward Morris, as Essex Singles Champion, represented the County in the Eastern Counties finals on Saturday last

He beat John Tufts (Norfolk 21-7) in the semi-final and followed that up with another emphatic win in the final

where he triumphed over Chris Beard (Bedfordshire) 21-8

Edward has had a fantastic year, with this victory topping it off nicely - I suspect that he's is going to need some silver polish this winter !!

STANDARDISED WEEKS CALENDAR

In preparation for the end of the 2021 season and the commencement of 2022, I hope this helps

It has always been the practise that fixture lists follow the week numbers from the Bowls England master calendar (which can be found here) and that week 18 is generally accepted as the first week of the bowls calendar (irrespective of club opening dates)

When clubs close / re-open is a matter for themselves

MESSAGE FROM JILL POLLEY - VERA COUSENS

I am so sorry to have to pass on the sad news that Vera Cousens died recently. Vera was a member of South Woodford Bowling Club and County President in 1994 (her husband Dennis was also ECBA President, in 1989). For many years she arranged our annual County Tour. A very gentle, quiet lady, who will be sadly missed. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday 12th October 2021 at 3.00pm at Forest Park Crematorium, Hainault.
