MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM MANAGER - MALCOLM STARK

What a fantastic set of matches on Sunday in the Semi-final and Final of the Balcomb Trophy

Essex led from the start in the morning’s semi-final, 4 up at 5 ends, 9 at 10, 10 at 15, 12 at 17 but then lost the last 4 ends on each rink. However, skilful game management meant that over those 8 ends we only conceded 11 shots and came out winners 37-36 (cards here)

Much the same in the afternoon session with Essex leading by 7 at 5 ends, 12 at 10, 7 at 15, 11 at 18. Once again we saw the game out, losing a net of 2 shots in the last 6 ends to come out winners 45-36 (cards here)

What a day! Fantastic bowling all round and two great results! Winners photographs here and here

This victory is especially gratifying as we are the only team to successfully defend the title (having won in 2022). Three in a row, anyone?

NOTICE FROM JILL POLLEY - UNFINISHED FINALS

The finals on Saturday were played in appalling weather. Everyone, players, umpire and markers deserve medals. With a reduction in ends we managed to get through the semi-finals and finals of the Unbadged Pairs, Benevolent Triples and the final of the Albert Crabb. Our valiant semi-finalists and finalists in the Unbadged Singles battled through to 21 shots. Everyone is to be congratulated. Braintree did a wonderful job in hosting the day and I thank everyone involved. The green held up under the constant rain and was a credit to the greenkeeper. Thanks a million.

What a contrast. There was sunshine all the way for the semi-finals and final of the Champion of Champions on Sunday. This isn't any consolation for those who squelched their way through Saturday. If only we could order the weather. Well done to all and thanks to Witham for hosting this at short notice.

All, the weekend's results may be found here

Finally, I would like to thank the Officers of the County and the supporters who came on both days. Your players did you proud.

Jill Polley

Hon. Sec. and Competition Sec.

MIXED FORTUNES THIS WEEKEND

We have to report we had mixed fortunes in the Middleton Cup / Johns Trophy this weekend

I think it's best to let the respective team manager’s comments tell the tale

MIDDLETON CUP

Disappointment would be a huge understatement felt by the management team & players following Saturday’s narrow defeat!

With a lead of 28 shots at halfway it was looking positive but as we all know, whatever the sport, it's never done at half time (scores here)!

Thanks to all the players' commitment during the season & we go again in the Balcomb semi-final on 20th August looking to dispel the disappointment currently felt.

I congratulated Bob Morton (Hunts Manager) & wished them good luck at Leamington against Lincolnshire, he did likewise for our Balcomb journey. Best regards, Malcolm

JOHNS TROPHY

Just back from Potton, a very very wet Potton BC in Bedfordshire.

The Essex John’s Trophy Team won by 38 shots against Leicestershire (142 v 104)

A great win in such awful conditions

We have now qualified for the semi-final In Leamington on Saturday 19th August at 09:30 against a strong Devon side

Should we be successful, we will be playing the winners of the semi-final between Surrey and Lincolnshire at 14:00

Wendy Buckingham

SPECTATORS WELCOME - so please come along and Support President Joan Barrett
